Climbing Coropuna: Covered in permanent snow and ice, Coropuna is the highest mountain in southern Peru, reaching 6,425 meters. It is located 8 hours north of Arequipa by public transport. Secondary mountaineering equipment is included: crampons, ice axe, and rope.
During the ascent, you can observe local fauna such as llamas, guanacos, alpacas, vicuñas, and vizcachas, as well as typical flora like yareta and ichu grass. Climbing gear, including crampons, trekking poles, and a rope, is necessary for the climb. Only highly experienced guides attempt the Coropuna climb because a thorough knowledge of the route is essential. However, the climb itself is not particularly difficult, and a healthy, acclimatized person can complete it. For those without high-altitude mountaineering experience, it is best to start with Misti or Chachani before attempting Coropuna.
