Climbing Pichu Pichu

Climbing Pichu Pichu

Climbing Pichu Pichu is one of the three volcanoes that dominate Arequipa. The surrounding environment and landscapes are splendid; you'd think you were in Bolivia. Pichu Pichu reaches 5,664 meters, and its summit is accessible to everyone, although it's a bit challenging because the path is very rugged. Two days are more than enough for the ascent, as the southern side is rarely snow-covered, making the long hike to the summit easier.

Itinerary

Day 1: Arequipa - Salinas Lagoon

Departure from Arequipa at 8:00 AM in a private vehicle. We will travel for 3 hours to Salinas Lagoon, located at 4,300 meters. This lagoon is a natural habitat for a very special fauna: pink flamingos. We will also see llamas, alpacas, and vicuñas. During certain times of the year, it is actually a salt flat. The landscapes are magnificent; you would think you were in Bolivia, as the lagoon is surrounded by the majestic Misti volcano (5,825 meters), Pichu Pichu (5,664 meters), and also the Ubinas volcano (5,672 meters), which is none other than the most active in Peru. Eruptions are guaranteed! But don't worry, there's no danger...

We will camp at around 4,400 meters in the hot springs and enjoy a spectacular sunset!

Day 2: Pichu Pichu - Arequipa

Early morning wake-up call and head to "Pichu Pichu Basecamp," located at approximately 4700m. Today is a day of climbing! 900m of elevation gain awaits us, or 5 to 6 hours of hiking round trip.

You will be rewarded for your efforts once you reach the summit. The view is breathtaking, overlooking the city of Arequipa and its volcanoes, Misti and Chachani, as well as the entire salt flat and the Ubinas volcano. The descent is fantastic, with the possibility of jumping and sliding down the steep slopes of Pichu Pichu!

Finally, we will have plenty of time to rest during our 4x4 return to Arequipa. Approximate arrival time: 5:00 PM.
